Insecurity : Persons with disabilities worst hit

Centre for Citizens with Disabilities, CCD,  said citizens living with disabilities are worst hit in terms of security challenges even as it blamed disability on the high level of corruption in Nigeria.

Addressing journalists in Lagos, CCD Executive Director Mr. David Anyaele said the nation is today, faced with unprecedented security challenges occasioned by robbery, kidnapping, militancy, herdsmen attacks, and Boko Haram insurgency which have increased disability rates in Nigeria ranging from physical disability, sight, speech and hearing impairments as well as mental disability amongst others.

He said the recent attacks in the middle belt of Nigeria particularly Benue and Plateau States have posed a security threat to persons living with disabilities. He said, “whenever attacks occur in Nigeria, beyond the casualties, are those that suffer from one form of disability or the other. The worrisome part of this situation is that the Nigeria State struggles so much to report number of citizens that suffer disability as a result of these attacks, thereby subjecting survivals of these attacks to total abandonment and neglect by the state, whose primary responsibility is to protect the lives of its citizens,”

The Executive Director solicited for media support to achieve the goal of the organisation adding, “we request the media to support us in this struggle because you are the sight for the visually impaired, leg for the physically challenged and voice for the voiceless in the society,”

Also, he urged the federal government to continue in the fight for corruption which has eaten deep in all facets of life in the country, “CCD supports government efforts and campaign to scrap corruption in the society, which in many cases could be traced to incidence of disability in the country due to looting of State resources earmarked for provision of goods and services. The inability of citizens to access quality health services, education, road infrastructure etc, contributes in no small measure to incidence of disability as a result of looting of fund budgeted for the procurement and provision of social amenities that will enhance the quality of lives of the citizens, “
