Commemoration of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities

The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) held an event to commemorate the International Day for Persons with Disabilities (#IDPD2021). This year’s theme is: Leadership and Participation of Persons with Disabilities toward an Inclusive, Accessible and Sustainable Post-Covid-19 World.

The annual observance of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed in 1992 by United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Through Enhancing Access to Justice and Political Participation for women, the elderly and youth with disabilities project, CCD is used the commemoration of the #IDPD2021 to sensitize MDAs, OPDs, the media and the general public of the need to include PWDs in leadership positions to foster an inclusive society. Mr. David O. Anyaele during his opening remark used the opportunity to call on the President to sign the Electoral Bill, this will remove all the barriers PWDs encounter in the electoral process. He further added that for a nation to have effective political system, the Justice system of the country must be transparent and accessible to all, including PWDs.
