CCD Commends HoR for the Move to Institutionalize Sign Language Interpretation During Plenaries
CCD commends Chairperson, Nigeria House of Representative Committee on Disability Affairs Hon. Miriam Onuoha for moving a motion yesterday at the House of Representatives plenary for the Provision of Sign Language Interpreters during plenaries and other Functions in the National Assembly”.
This motion is very important to the disability community as its implementation would go a long way toward eliminating the struggle to follow the proceedings at the National Assembly among the Deaf in Nigeria. It would inspire any Nigerian with hearing impairment to aspire to serve as a member of the National Assembly or work at the Parliament.
The move by Hon. Onuoha to institutionalize the use of Sign Language Interpreter at the National Assembly is in fulfillment of her promise at the commemoration of the 2nd Anniversary of the passage of the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018 organised by the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) early this year in Abuja.
We wish to reassure the House of Representative Committee on Disability Affairs of CCD’s commitment to support the Committee towards achieving its mandate of ensuring the full implementation of the National Disability Act at all levels of government and improved welfare of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
Thank you.
