CCD: Chairman, House Of Reps Committee On Electoral Matters And Political Party Affairs, Join Campaign For Equal Voting Access For PWDs.

The Chairman, house of reps. Committee on Electoral Matters and Political Party Affairs, Hon. Aishatu Jibril Dukku, has joined the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), in her campaign for Equal Voting Access for Persons with Disabilities.
Hon. Dukku who declared her interest for the campaign when the Executive Director of CCD, David Anyaele and his team visited the Chairman to brief her on the essence of the campaign, thanked the centre for her efforts in ensuring that the rights of Persons with Disabilities in the country are protected.
She also promised to introduce other members of the committee to the campaign and work towards ensuring that Persons with Disabilities are not marginalized during elections.
Mr. David Anyaele and his team were at the National Assembly to brief the lawmaker, on the Centre’s findings during her observation of Edo State Gubernatorial election conducted in 2016.
Part of the issues highlighted were the absence of Sign language interpreters for the deaf at polling units, absence of braille materials for the blind at polling units, inaccessible polling units among other barriers that hindered the effective participation of Persons with Disabilities during the Edo State gubernatorial election.
Mr. David Anyaele, called for the speedy harmonization of the disability bill that has been passed by the two chambers of the National Assembly since 2016, he also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to review the existing polling units in the country and ensure that they are accessible to PWDs as well make adequate budget to cover for the needs of PWDs which include-provision of braille materials, sign language interpreters among others.
Recall that the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities on Wednesday, October 4th, 2017, launched the Campaign for Equal Voting Access for Persons with Disabilities in Awka, Anambra State
