CCD builds the capacity of NPHCDA staff on National Disability Law

In the bid to keep improving awareness-creation around the National Disability Right Act, the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) on the 21st July 2022 visited the headquarters of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to train and build the capacity of the staff of the agency around the National Disability Law and its sections.

The CCD’s team comprising of Mrs. Peace Ezekiel, Mr. Humphrey Ukeaja, and Miss Ubong Daniel was welcomed by Mrs. Nneka Onwu, who gave an opening remark on behalf of the Executive Director of NPHCDA.

Mr. Humphrey led the presentation on the Discrimination against persons with disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018. He began with the historical background and preamble of how the bill was signed in 2019, after 13 years of struggle by CCD led coalition, and that the first section of the bill tackles discrimination and puts a penalty of 1 million on corporate bodies and 100,000 naira for individuals who discriminate against PWDs in Nigeria.

Humphrey in his presentation, dissected issues on accessibility hovering around infrastructure, facilities, and services; such as physical access to buildings, health care facilities and services, education, work and employment, transportation, and the National Commission of Persons with Disabilities.

During the closing remark, NPHCDA made commitments to align with the international best practices while complying with all the provisions of the National Disability Right Act in the coming year. This is believed will make infrastructural facilities and services accessible and highly inclusive, without leaving anyone out or behind.

Mr. Humphrey thanked the agency for the opportunity to help build their capacity around disability issues, and that communication should be open between both organizations, and assurances were made to that.
