About Us!
The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) formerly Amputees Rehabilitation Foundation (ARF) is an organization of, and for persons with disabilities that works to promote independent living, participation, human rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in development efforts. Established on the 22nd of Dec. 2002 in Lagos and incorporated with the Corporate Affairs Commission Abuja as a charity organization. Also, it works to educate, support and empower persons with disabilities and their families to maximize their potentials. We have over the past four years sought a redefinition of society’s perception of the plight of persons with disabilities.
The organisation was founded as a result of the founder’s harrowing experiences in the hands of the rebel warlords in the war-torn Sierra Leone who tearfully amputated his two hands, thereby forcefully consigning him into physical disability. It seeks to realize its mandate through embarking on campaign and advocacy projects, peer group support, networking activities, training, development and empowerment projects, legislative advocacy and pursuit of legal actions.
Presently, our organization is currently working on a pilot project on HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Among Persons with Disabilities, Campaign for Inclusive and Accessible Transport System and Banking Halls/Services for Persons with Disabilities as well as training of persons with disabilities on leadership. Early 2008, our Executive Director Mr. David O. Anyaele was elected in Kampala – Uganda as member of the Steering Committee of African Campaign on Disability and HIV/AIDS.
CCD’s Present Concern: CCD is presently concerned on Mainstreaming Disability in the HIV/AIDS National Strategic Framework for Action; Campaign for the Domestication of UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and Passing in to Law the bill on Nigerians with Disabilities; to provide peer counseling for newly disabled and their families. We are also interested in providing information on a broad range of subjects of interest to persons with disability, such information being related to coping with and overcoming the trauma of disability, Reproductive Health Education among Persons with Disabilities, Civic & Human Rights Education, Poverty Reduction Programmes for Persons with Disabilities, selecting and funding devices/aid among others.
